There are two types of urticaria: allergic and idiopathic. The allergic form has an immunological mechanism of formation, the causes of the idiopathic form have not been established.

In practice, urticaria is most often classified according to the etiological principle: food, medicinal, thermal, etc. Often the development of urticaria is associated with impaired function of internal organs, especially the liver( helminthic invasion, inflammation).

The main sign of urticaria is the appearance on any part of the skin of numerous rashes of bright pink color, strongly itching, having a dense consistency and blurred contours. On a bright pink background there are blisters, the rash which lasts a short time( 1-2 hours), then they completely disappear. Usually hives last for several days, but sometimes the disease lasts up to several months. In an acute period, patients complain of headaches, malaise, chills.

Giant urticaria: edema Quincke

With this form of urticaria, subcutaneous fat is involved in the process. It accumulates edematous exudate and there is a local swelling. Quincke's edema develops in places with loose fiber - on the mucous membranes of the mouth, on the lips, in the scrotal area.

When viewed, you can see that the affected area abruptly protrudes above the skin, has a dense consistency and a porcelain-white or slightly pink color. Edema lasts from several hours to several days, and then completely disappears. Especially dangerous is the edema of Quincke in the larynx, since in this case death can come from asphyxia( suffocation). With swelling of the larynx, a barking cough first appears, breathing becomes noisy and difficult, the patient is restless, rushes. Shortness of breath increases, the face becomes cyanotic. Such patients require urgent specialized care. At home, we recommend distracting hot foot and hand baths, mustard plasters on the back of the head.

Pediatric urticaria: pruritus

The disease develops against the background of exudative diathesis, more often in artificial persons and in overfed children. The disease can be attributed to the group of food allergies. Children's urticaria can also occur with insect bites, chronic foci of infection( tonsillitis, sinusitis, etc.).

On examination, there is a rash of a large number of blisters, which are quickly organized into nodules of pink-brown color, conical or hemispherical. At the top of each nodule is a small vial( gray papule).

Favorite localization of the elements of the rash - on the buttocks, trunk, in the area of large folds, on the upper limbs. Patients are constantly worried about severe itching, their skin is usually brushed, erosions and bloody crusts appear. Children are restless, capricious, lose sleep and appetite, lose weight. Sometimes diarrhea and vomiting are noted.

In rare cases, the rash spreads to the entire body and the condition of the patients worsens even more.

The disease usually goes to 6-7 years, but cases when it passes into a chronic neurodermite are not uncommon.

Children's urticaria must be able to distinguish from scabies, since the symptoms they have are very similar.
